Dive or Snorkel with the Mantas on the Big Island
This is an activity you don’t want to miss! It’s one of the most memorable dive or snorkel trips that you can do in Hawaii and is one of the top 10 dives to experience in the world. The Manta Ray Night Dive offers divers and snorkelers the opportunity to observe these majestic animals up close and personal. Marine life is often within inches of divers and snorkelers, offering a unique experience with wild animals in their environment. This is the reason careful guidelines for manta interaction need to be followed so as not to disturb them (please read the guidelines listed below).
Manta rays are gentle creatures. Even though they can have 12-foot wingspans and weigh over 1,000 pounds, they have no teeth, and unlike many types of rays, they have no barb at the base of their tails and are considered quite harmless to humans.
Afraid of the dark? Don’t worry, plenty of light is provided to attract the plankton that the manta rays feed upon. And as far as night dives go, this is a great dive for those who have plenty of night diving experience and those that have none (but have always wanted to try it). Regardless of your skill level diving at night, our experienced and friendly guides are here to instruct and safely lead you to discover the beauty of diving with Manta Rays. We keep our dive groups small and can accommodate any ability of diver. Our U.S. Coast Guard certified vessel is fast and safe and can access many impressive dive sites.
Bring the whole family! Don’t worry if you are the only certified diver in your group, or if no one in your party is certified. It is possible to dive or snorkel to see the manta rays at night. In fact, it is one of the only experiences that is equally spectacular for divers and snorkelers.

OBSERVE ONLY: No touching. Resist the urge to “pet” the mantas. This will rub off their protective mucus coating. Do not chase, grab, or try to take a ride on the mantas. This does not benefit the animal in any way.
DIVER POSITION: Divers must stay on or near the bottom. An open water column is necessary for the mantas to maneuver. Avoid contact with coral, sea urchins, or other marine life. Form a semi-circle with your group.
LIGHTS: Divers, please shine lights up into the water column to attract plankton. Snorkelers, please shine lights down.
BUBBLES: Divers, try to time your breathing so that you don’t blow bubbles up into the manta if it is passing over your head.
TAKING PHOTOS OR VIDEO: When taking underwater photos or video, be considerate of people and mantas. Minimize your equipment in the water column and let the mantas come to you.
